Founded in 1899 as the Astronomical and Astrophysical Society of America, in 1914 the name was changed to the American Astronomical Society. Beatrice Tinsley, astronomer and cosmologist, was first female professor of astronomy at Yale University, whose research made fundamental contributions to the astronomical understanding of how galaxies evolve, grow and die. Born in England, her family emigrated to New Zealand following World War II. She and her husband moved in 1963 to to Dallas, Texas.
